Join me in the protest against IKEA!

“The life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration.”
-Michael W. Fox, Vice President, The Human Society of the United States, The Inhumane Society, New York, 1990.

I’m assuming Mr. Fox has nothing made of wood in his house? Why do I ask? Welp, let’s take a look at one example of what trees are used for and what effects they have.

Coniferous Trees are used for the following:

  • lumber
  • paper
  • fuel
  • furniture

Deciduous Trees (such as oak, ash, beech and birch) which can be used for

  • furniture
  • wine barrels (oak)

I can go on with the daily use that comes from these trees…

… Those trees in which live the mighty wood ant! These ants are social insects and live in colonies which can number up to half a million individuals and possibly more!!! Not only that, but wouldn’t you know, wood ants love to have guests over such as the beetle, Lomechusa strumosa, who is treated just like part of the clan as well as the worm, Dendrodrilus rubidus, who is found more readily in the nest of the wood ants than in the surrounding soil. Think of all those lovely creatures that get killed or displaced because of the furniture, paper, housing material, etc. that we use day to day.

BTW, I love IKEA – great, cheap furniture!
